Joy & Pain

I thank thee, too
that all our joy,
is touched with pain.
That shadows fall
on brightest hours,
that thorns remain.
So that earth's bliss
may be our guide,
and not our chain !

A verse from an old Baptist Hymn - no idea of the title - that's lodged in my brain for years, and popped out whilst preparing for something else.
